5 Activities You Should Remove Your Rings or Diamond Jewelry During
The engagement ring we wear daily reminds us of good feelings and the precious moments we share with our loved ones every time we see it on our finger.
Therefore, it’s no surprise that many women keep theirs on constantly without ever taking them off. But did you know that there are certain activities where you should remove your ring to prevent the diamond from dulling, maintain the durability of the metal, and even extend the lifespan of your jewelry? Let's take a look at what those activities are.
1. Exercising
Before you get all sweaty while exercising, you should take off your ring. The metals used for rings—whether gold, white gold, or silver—are actually quite soft despite their appearance, and they can lose their shape if subjected to impact or heavy pressure. This poses risks; for example, if the prongs holding the diamond are knocked or bent, it could cause the stone to fall out, or the ring itself could become distorted.
2. While applying lotion
When applying cream or lotion to your body or face, you might accidentally get some on the rings or earrings you are wearing. The cream can coat the surface of the diamond, making it look dull and robbing it of the sparkle it had when it was brand new. So, before you apply lotion, take off your jewelry, wait until the cream has been absorbed into your skin, and then put it back on. This will keep your diamond jewelry looking sparkling and beautiful all the time.
3. While applying makeup
Did you know that cosmetics, hairspray, perfume, and other chemicals you use in your daily life can cause diamond jewelry to become dull? We often see customers at Gems Heritage returning to have their jewelry cleaned or replated, and we can often see cosmetic powder lodged in the crevices of the setting, both on top and underneath the diamond between the prongs. This prevents the diamond from sparkling as it should because it is covered in dust or oil. But don't worry, you can easily clean your jewelry at home by mixing a diamond cleaning solution or dish soap with warm water, using a soft toothbrush to gently scrub the jewelry in the solution, rinsing with plain water, and drying it with a hair dryer. Your diamond jewelry will look as good as new.
4. Swimming
You should absolutely avoid wearing jewelry while swimming. When your body is exposed to cold water, your skin can contract, which may cause your ring to become loose and slip off easily. Furthermore, the chlorine in swimming pools can affect the metal setting, potentially causing discoloration. For safety, it is better to take it off and store it away.
5. Cleaning
During cleaning, we often accidentally knock our hands against hard surfaces like sinks or kitchen counters, or even the act of wringing out a cloth forcefully can distort the band or cause the prongs to bend. Additionally, household chemicals like bleach, ammonia, and others can cause the color of the metal to change.
Now that you know, don't forget to take off your rings or jewelry! :)
